WHEN: 4-class session / Thursdays, Sept 3- 24 from 5:30-7 PM
DESCRIPTION: Led by artist and instructor Jen Aitchison, this session of After School Art encourages teen artists to explore the psychology of place through drawing and mixed media. What makes an empty room feel unsettling? How can light, perspective, and composition create a sense of mystery or anticipation? Long before liminal spaces became an internet phenomenon, artists like Giorgio de Chirico, Edward Hopper, and David Hockney explored these questions through evocative paintings that invite viewers to imagine what happened before—or what might happen next.
Students will examine the visual language of atmosphere while strengthening their skills in perspective, composition, value, and mixed-media techniques. Drawing inspiration from historical and contemporary artists, including Kane Pixels, teens will develop a series of original interiors and environments that evoke emotion, narrative, and ambiguity. This class encourages experimentation, critical thinking, and personal expression while building strong technical drawing skills.
After School Art classes are offered every month from September-May for ages 5-18. During each 4-class monthly session, students will explore an arts-related topic, movement, or technique through a variety of 2D media such as watercolor, pastel, graphite, acrylic, or printmaking. Because each monthly session offers a different theme and set of projects, families are welcome to register for one session, a few, or the whole year!
