Basics of Self-Publishing + On-Demand Publishing/ Sept 26
WHEN: 1 day workshop /Saturday, September 26 from 1-4 PM
AGES: Adults, 18+
DESCRIPTION: Have you been thinking about publishing your book but aren’t sure where to begin? Join novelist Joyce Hicks for a workshop exploring whether indie/self-publishing is the right path for your project.
Self-publishing through print-on-demand gives authors the ability to take control of the publishing process, from preparing files to choosing distribution options, while also earning royalties from book sales. In this session, you’ll gain a better understanding of the steps involved and leave feeling confident about moving forward as an indie author—whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction.
You’ll learn how to obtain an ISBN, navigate e-book and print distribution channels, find free tools for DIY publishing, and know when it may be helpful to work with professionals for cover design, layout, and file preparation. We’ll also discuss timelines, costs, royalties, and the technical knowledge needed to bring your book to life.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have the resources and information you need to begin your publishing journey.
Please note: While print-on-demand allows for images and hardcover options, it is not always the best fit for art books or photography books where high-quality image reproduction is essential.
Topics Covered:
How to determine if indie publishing is the right choice for your book and creative vision
ISBNs, copyright, distribution channels, hybrid publishing, and file uploads
Publishing costs: what you can do yourself, when to use free tools, and when to hire professionals
The technology and skills needed to publish successfully
Understanding royalties and what to expect from book sales
LOCATION: Downstairs classroom
TUITION: $40 for non-members / $36 for current CAC members, enter code CACMEMBER at checkout to receive 10% member discount
SUPPLIES: a notetaking tools, either pen and notebook, or laptop is recommended.
