Landscape Painting Essentials / November 7 + 8

$190.00

WHEN: 2-day workshop / Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 9 AM - 4 PM, with a 1-hour break for lunch

AGES: Adults, 18+

DESCRIPTION: Join artist Mark Vander Vinne for a two-day workshop exploring the fundamental decisions behind every successful landscape painting. Great landscapes begin long before the first brushstroke, and this workshop will help you build the skills to transform a beautiful scene into a compelling work of art.
On the first day, you'll focus on planning your painting. Learn how to choose strong reference material, simplify complex landscapes, create thumbnail sketches, and use value to establish dynamic compositions and clear focal points before you ever pick up a brush.
Day two shifts the focus to expression through color. Explore how color relationships, harmony, and dominance can shape mood and atmosphere while practicing techniques for mixing convincing landscape colors. You'll learn to use color with intention to create paintings that are expressive rather than simply descriptive.
Whether you paint from life or from photographs, these principles will help you approach every landscape with greater confidence and purpose.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate + Above

LOCATION: Vinay and Suman Das Foundation 2d Studio across the street at 116

TUITION: $190 for non-members / $171.00 for current CAC members, enter code CACMEMBER at checkout to receive 10%-member discount

SUPPLIES: Students are expected to bring the following supplies:

Mark will demo in oil, but all mediums are welcome. Please adjust the supply list to reflect your chosen medium.

•  Notebook and/or sketchbook for notes, doodles, and thumbnails.
 • A variety of brushes, sizes 4-10.
 • A portable palette for mixing paint on.
 • A metal palette knife (a must for mixing).
 • Artist-grade odorless mineral spirits (OMS such as Gamsol) & a metal or glass container with lid. (Please, no Turpentine or hardware store grade OMS.)
 • 4-6 small panels. 5x7, 6x8, 8x10 or 9x12 are good sizes. Nothing larger than 9x12. You can take a larger canvas/panel such as a 12” x 16” and divide it into half or quadrants with artist tape to create multiple painting sections on one board. We will use 1-2 paintings a day.
 • Paints: A limited palette of primary colors is mandatory. If it’s within your budget, I would also recommend bringing a full palette of color (one warm and one cool of each primary color).
 • Limited Palette: Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Napthol Red, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White or Titanium-Zinc White, Transparent Earth Red
 • Optional Colors to create a split-complementary palette or full palette: Cad. Yellow Deep, Cerulean or Prussian Blue, Phthalo Turquoise, Rose Madder, or other colors you like.
